We do have some general expectations that you might find at any other site. These expectations weren’t created to limit your creativity or anything else like that, but rather just so this can be the best it can be – a realistic and fun site.
That being said, any realistic and fun site needs good, active writers. That means you, kiddies. We don’t have a concrete amount of time, but we do request that you post at least once a week. And not just in your classes. We want you to post everywhere. Start new threads. Join an existing one. Just post!
If you’re a staff member, we do expect that you will fulfill your duties. We have obviously placed a great deal of trust in you, and so we expect that you’re going to do what you said you were going to. That means, do your part. You’re expected to post also. If you don’t, we’re going to demote, suspend, or sack you.
We also expect you’re writing to be kid-approved. Do realize that any 13 year old could be joining the site, and we don’t want them stumbling onto a sex thread – so keep it clean. The administration will lock or delete any threads we find offensive. Also, you should know, we don’t tolerate swearing. We will edit your profanity and you will be punished if we see it.
You’re also expected to write in proper English. C’mon, really. No one can understand “r u red-e 2 go?” That’s why we’re making you post in REAL sentences using REAL words that REALLY exist in a REAL dictionary. But more about that kind of stuff later.
You’re expected to write in third-person limited-omniscient point of view. Everything should be past tense, as well. Your verbs will be past tense and you should write your character knowing only what it should know.
I know for those of you who aren’t English teachers, this might sound a little confusing. That is why I’m going to break it down for you in simple terms so you can all understand and thus, we’ll all right well.
Bob walks in and says “hi.” Then he drinks a glass of water sitting nearby. The above is incorrect.
It should read: Bob walked in and said “hi.” Then he took a drink of water from a glass sitting nearby.
You should also think about what your character knows and what they do not know. Even if you – the writer – know something, that doesn’t mean your character does. This means, if you’re character was TOLD that Bob likes Sue, than your character can know it. But if you, the writer, was told that Bob likes Sue, than your character can’t know.
We also expect members to write in proper English. We will not punish you for a few spelling mistakes, but we will punish you for other things. Do NOT use “webtalk” (R, U, W/E, OMG, etc.) in any role playing threads or you will be asked to leave the site. I’m dead serious. I have little tolerance for stuff like that. This is a good role-play and if you don’t care about you writing, go write elsewhere.
Put quotation marks around your dialogue (“Hello, how are you?” asked Mary-Sue). Use paragraphs (on the boards, we can’t indent, so we just skip a line). Use periods, comas, question marks, exclamation points, whatever. Also use correct capitalization and please no StIcKy kEyS.
Also, please no power playing, or acting like a god. We don’t want the best, the prettiest, or the smartest students here. Act real. And let other’s have a chance to write in their own character. Don’t pass 15 minutes in storyline without letting the other person(s) you’re writing with add some sort of input. Please don’t write major actions for other characters, like leaving, for example, without their permission.
Make sure you use “time” correctly, also. We don’t have a day-by-day calendar, so your threads will just have to fit into place. But please remember to use common sense – if you’re writing in a Monday morning thread, don’t have your character talk about a thread that took place two days later on Wednesday afternoon.
Bolding a word in a post is used for emphasis. Italicizing a word or words is used for a character’s thought or also for emphasis. Underlining a word is hardly ever used but can be used for emphasis. Do not use marquees, color, larger text, glowing text, or shadow text in your posts or you’ll be punished. They’re distracting and unnecessary.
You might also see little Out of Character (OOC) messages at the bottom of a post (For example, {You don’t mind if I join, do you?}). These messages are okay to use, as long as you don’t use them very often, they’re short, and they aren’t the only thing in a post.
All classes are role played, and there are four classes a year. There will be a professor for each class, obviously, and the professor can deduct and add house points. Professors are also responsible for letting the administration know of any constant troublemakers or anyone who didn’t show up for classes.
The professor can pose “pop quizzes” or tests in the role played lesson, although if you do poor on the test or quiz, it really won’t count against you. There aren’t any real grades, but if each student did have a grade, it would be based on participation and attendance.
You should know, however, the classes aren’t the main thing going on. You are expected to be active in other places – start threads, join threads, participate in school wide activities. Whatever. Just be active somewhere else and you’ll be okay in our book.
Here, we have two Headpersons – a Headmaster and a Headmistress – and this does add a spin to things. Do not think, though, that if one of us says no you can go to the other – because that won’t work! We agree on everything, and we’re in regular contact, so don’t try to pull anything over us.
The Headmistress has the final say in matters. If an issue is brought to their attention – they are in charge, and what they say goes. If one of them says jump, you jump. It’s as simple as that, folks. Any questions? Didn’t think so. Moving on.
We also have two Deputy Headperson, who is also part of the Administration team. She/he reports directly to the Headpersons. If both of the Headpersons are out of contact – the Deputy has the final say in matters. She/he is expected to uphold school policy, answer basic questions, and edit, lock, move, and delete threads and posts.
There are also four Head of Houses (HOH’s) – one for each of the four houses. They should have an active presence in their house’s boards, and should help maintain school policy, chose prefects, help maintain house activity and loyalty, and be a positive influence in their students lives. Students should talk with their HOH first, before going to the Deputy or Headpersons.
There are also several Professors – one for each class, obviously. Although HOH’s outrank them on the ladder of power, they should answer to the Deputy and Headpersons. They are in charge of upholding school policy, creating four lessons a year, for each year. They should also edit, lock, move and delete threads and posts in their classrooms.
Also part of the administration, there is one student Head Boy, and one student Head Girl. They are chosen by the Headpersons with the advice of the professors. They answer to their Professors, HOH’s, the Deputy, and the Headpersons – and should do anything, within reason, that they are asked. They are also responsible for upholding school policy and being a positive influence on their fellow classmates lives.
HOH’s will also be picking two prefects for their house. Prefects answer to their HOH’s and are responsible for upholding school policy within their houses, maintaining house spirit, activity, and loyalty, and should edit, lock, move, and delete threads and posts in their house.
Obviously, this is a world JK Rowling created, and we do not wish to take the credit for it in anyway. “Harry Potter,” “Hogwarts,” and all other proper names created by JKR are in fact copyrighted by JKR. These remain her copyright and it is not our goal to take credit for them.
We are, however, taking credit for creating this wonderful site for you all to RP at. The images are ours, and the board design is ours. We do take credit for these, and they are copyrighted. Please understand we don’t wish to violate JKR’s copyright, but we are trying to create a bit of fun for ourselves, as well as others.
You should also know that this site is entirely non-profit. No one – that includes administrators and members – is making money off of our site. Please don’t send us a PM expecting real money because you taught a lesson… we’re not going to pay you.
